Shieldpay

Control Without Compromise.

Shieldpay is an FCA regulated payments provider operating in the legal sector, trusted to handle complex and high value transactions. As regulatory pressure increased around how law firms manage client money, Shieldpay identified a rare opportunity to lead the shift toward Third Party Managed Accounts before change became mandatory. Despite having a strong product and market credibility, Shieldpay lacked a joined up marketing engine to educate the sector, shape opinion, and convert awareness into adoption. Fellow partnered with Shieldpay through a twelve month Brand Builder engagement to define a clear category position, build brand authority, and support long term growth by turning regulatory change into a commercial advantage.

Our work began with understanding why adoption was stalling. Research revealed that law firms were not resistant to change, but cautious. Fear of losing control, cultural conservatism, and low awareness of credible alternatives were slowing decision making. While risk and compliance concerns were rising, the language and tone used across the category often amplified fear rather than reassurance.

Competitor analysis showed a market dominated by functional, compliance led messaging that felt cold and transactional. This exposed a clear opportunity. Shieldpay could differentiate not by being louder, but by being clearer. By addressing emotional barriers alongside operational ones, the brand could position itself as a trusted guide through change rather than another technical solution.

From these insights, a defining tension emerged. Law firms wanted progress, but not at the cost of control. This led to the strategic idea Control Without Compromise, a positioning designed to resolve that conflict rather than avoid it.

The idea reframed Payment Accounts as an evolution of best practice, not a forced concession to regulation. Creatively, we explored how clarity, reassurance, and confidence could replace complexity and fear. Language became more benefit led, human, and precise. Early concepts focused on calm authority, allowing Shieldpay to speak with confidence without sounding disruptive. This exploration established a clear point of view and a brand tone capable of leading a conservative audience through meaningful change.

The brand was developed through deliberate restraint. Messaging was stripped back to focus on outcomes rather than features, reinforcing trust and comprehension at every touchpoint. A clear tone of voice system balanced fintech clarity with legal professionalism, ensuring Shieldpay felt modern without alienating risk averse audiences.

Visually, the brand doubled down on clean minimalism. Layouts created space for ideas to land. Design cues from modern payments technology were softened through disciplined typography, controlled colour use, and confident composition. This aesthetic was applied consistently across campaign assets, content, sales collateral, and digital touchpoints, allowing Shieldpay to show up as a calm, credible category leader.

The positioning was activated through a full funnel brand and marketing system, anchored by a lead generation focused campaign for Payment Accounts. Content, landing pages, sales materials, and always on activity worked together to educate the market and support conversion.

Sales teams were equipped with clearer narratives and supporting collateral, enabling more confident conversations with target law firms. As awareness grew, prospects entered the funnel better informed and closer to decision. The result was a stronger inbound pipeline, faster sales cycles, and increased adoption of the Payment Account product, positioning Shieldpay firmly ahead of regulation and competitors alike.
