The Development of the Honda Logo
The Honda logo has seen many iterations and designs, however, the design has always implemented the ‘H’.
1961 – 1969
Birthed in the early 1960’s Honda’s first logo used a burgundy background, with their distinctive H and the words Honda under this. The ‘H’ which is now an iconic emblem of their manufacture had a unique design, with a wider top and narrow bottom. The use of a simple San-Serif typeface for the word ‘HONDA’ under the ‘H’ is clean and stands out with its white letters.
This logo established their brand identity during their early development. Although throughout this article we will see development, the logo always links back to this original design.
1969 – 1981
In 1969 the Honda logo saw a dramatic twist, removing the burgundy colour and the typeface. Simplifying the logo to a stylised white ‘H’ on a black shaped background. This newer design fits with the ideology of the period and of the development of Honda as a whole. Sleeker and simple, the logo would feature on all of their cars during the period.
The design maintained the stylised ‘H’, with its slim bottom and wider top. Using sharp corners on all areas of the logo apart from the inner section of the ‘H’.
1981 – 2000
In the early 1980’s the logo saw its third update and largest development. It features a bordered ‘H’ with similar styling to the 1969 logo, but using a thinner and wider stance. The emblem features more curves throughout the design giving it a more streamlined appearance.
This logo also brings back the ‘HONDA’ text, using a large bold uppercase serif typeface. The bold text would not feature directly on the cars badge, but would feature in all over areas of their business. The text and overall design uses black writing on a white background, giving it a commanding impression.
2000 – 2024
The overall shape of the logo has seen little change since the 1980’s. However, the 2000s logo introduced more colour and texture to the design. With the emblem now having a 3D silver design that looks to add a new dimension to the classic ‘H’ design.
The type face remains much the same, however, now uses a red design. This colour red is now somewhat iconic to Honda since the early 2000s and calls back to the 1961 logo.
2024 – Present
The newest iteration of the Honda logo harkens back to the original 1961 logo. With its simplistic black ‘H’ on white, the logo looks to refocus the brand. With Honda’s goals being set on electric vehicles, the new design looks to carry their reputation to a new era of cars.
